Step 1: Get API Key
You need an API key to take website screenshots via API. Most tools require creating an account to obtain one. Let’s see how to generate the API key for using the HTML to Image API.
- On your browser, go to https://htmlcsstoimg.com/ and click Get Started at the top right.
- In the Registration screen, fill in your Full name, Email and Password and click Register button.
- You will receive a verification email at your email address. Click on the link in the email to verify your account and activate it.
- Now, login to your account with the credentials and make a note of the API key displayed on the top left.
Step 2: Create Account on Zapier
Zapier is a powerful automation tool that connects various apps and services. It offers a free unlimited trial for 15 days. To take website screenshots, you need to connect the HTML to Image API tool to Zapier and create a Zap.
- Go to https://zapier.com and click Start free with email or Start free with Google.
- Here, you will be prompted with a set of questions about you and the need for using the Zapier tool.
- Once you are done with answering all those questions, your Zapier account will be created.
Step 3: Create a Zap to Take Website Screenshots
Zap is an automation workflow on Zapier that allows you to do things automatically. For taking website screenshots, you need to create a Zap for setting a schedule to automatically take screenshots of the website. Let’s see how to do that.
- After logging to your Zapier account, click Create Zap on the top left.
- You need to select a trigger app. Click the Trigger icon and select Schedule by Zapier in the pop-up screen.
- Next, configure the scheduling options to trigger the Zap daily or based on your need. Here, you will see four options Every Day, Every Hour, Every Month, Every Week. Click Continue button after setting up the schedule.
- After setting up the screenshot schedule, select the Time of Day at which the screenshot of the website needs to be captured. Also, you can select Yes from the Trigger on weekends? drop-down box if you want to take website screenshots on weekends also.
- Next, for the Action app, you need to select an app that can capture website screenshots. In this example, we will be using the HTML to Image tool.
- After selecting the tool, you need to login to it (e.g. HTML to Image) to connect that with Zapier using the API key you had generated in Step 1.
- Then, select Capture Website Screenshot as the event.
- Next, you need to set up the action step with details like the URL of the website, image quality and other fields.
- Finally, click the Test trigger button to enable the Zap and test whether it works correctly. If it works, it will display the path of the website screenshot that is taken automatically.
That’s it. From now on, Zapier will automatically take daily screenshots of the specified website based on your schedule. And, you will receive a email notification after the screenshot of the website is taken.
With Zapier and HTML to Image API, you can automate taking screenshots of multiple websites and schedule them through different Zaps.
